Find out everything about ZenyPass

Getting started

  • What is ZenyPass? What is the benefit of using a password manager?

What is ZenyPass? What is the benefit of using a password manager?

ZenyPass is a password manager. It is a web application that allows   + to store and protect your passwords in a secure and personal environment   + Connect to all your sites more easily

By using ZenyPass, you will only have one password to remember, the one you set yourself to access ZenyPass.

In addition, ZenyPass also allows you to strengthen access to your data and accounts online, allowing you to easily follow an essential online security principle: use different and complex passwords for each of your accounts.

This is essential since in case one of your accounts is hacked, re-using the same password everywhere poses a risk of very rapid spread of this hacking to all of your accounts and data. A different password for each site avoids this propagation.

But without a password manager like ZenyPass, this principle is very complicated to apply, since complex passwords are impossible to remember, and complicated to type.

ZenyPass is therefore a simpler, safer and faster way to connect to your Internet accounts.

  • Isn't it risky to log all my passwords in ZenyPass?

Isn't it risky to log all my passwords in ZenyPass?

No, it's much safer than any other way to manage your passwords.

    • Your data saved in ZenyPass is protected in personal digital vaults, which benefit from state of the art security systems.
    • Your data is only accessible by you: without your ZenyPass password, which only you know, it is impossible to read your data, even for ZenyPass administrators.
    • All your personal data stored in ZenyPass (your usernames, passwords ...) are encrypted (that is to say transformed into an unreadable string of characters) by your devices, before passing over the Internet to synchronize With our servers. This data can only be deciphered on your devices, thanks to your ZenyPass password. This means that your data, even if intercepted on the Internet by hackers, would be illegible, indecipherable, and therefore unusable.
    • Your primary password is not the only key needed to decipher your personal data. If it was used on a device that you did not previously authorized to access to your vault, it would not allow access to your data.
  • Why trust ZenyPass specifically?

    Why trust ZenyPass specifically?

For many reasons:   + Your data is totally private: the only way to access your personal data   is to unlock your ZenyPass vault, with your ZenyPass password (which   only you know and which is never transmitted on our servers), from one of the   devices you have previously authenticated. Even the administrators of ZenyPass   have no way to see what you have stored in your vault (ZenyPass is a so-called "zero-knowledge" solution).   + ZenyWay, the company behind ZenyPass, is a French company,   which hosts user data on servers located in Europe. Those data   are therefore subject to European legislation. ZenyPass is also one of the password managers referenced by the French CNIL ("“Commission Nationale Informatique et Libertés”").   + ZenyPass is an open source application, which means that the software code is freely available on the Internet.   This is the guarantee that whatever we explain about our security systems,   or about the confidentiality of users' data, can be reviewed and confirmed by any software expert,   and in full independence. In addition, an "open source" application can benefit from the "open source community"   for technological watch or warnings   on new threats.

  • Who is ZenyPass made for?

    Who is ZenyPass made for?

ZenyPass is made for all! We all need a reliable and secure solution today, to manage our many login credentials to websites.

For those who are not comfortable with new technologies, ZenyPass is a turnkey solution that allows to manage their credentials in a secure way, without any technical knowledge. It works with any computer and any recent phone, as soon as they have a browser to surf the Web.

For those instead who are familiar with current technologies, ZenyPass is a solution at the forefront of the latest technology in digital security. ZenyPass is especially distributed under an open source license, for full transparency, and to benefit from the expertise of the open source community. ZenyPass is a web application, it works on all platforms, including Linux computers. The source code of the application is available on github.

For business professionals who have to cope with many different login credentials to access different sites of their company, their partners, or their clients, ZenyPass is also a solution, allowing both to use stronger passwords to better protect their data, but also to increase productivity by connecting faster. Moreover, since ZenyPass does not require any software installation, it is usable even by users who do not have administrator rights to install new applications on their company computer.

And finally, for companies or administrations, in order to better protect access to services and internal databases, ZenyPass helps to accompany a transition to more strengthened requirements for password complexity, to better protect access to personal data held by the company, in particular in the context of the new European regulations (GDPR). And since ZenyPass is "open source", companies can ensure that no data stored in ZenyPass is accessible on our servers (ZenyPass is a zero-knowledge cloud solution).

  • What does ZenyPass look like?

    What does ZenyPass look like?

You can see a few screenshots of ZenyPass on the page features of this site.

But the best is still to try it ! Creating a ZenyPass vault is free, and allows you to manage your first passwords, without limited trial period, without any limitation of functionality, and without any commitment (no credit card needed, ...).

System requirements and access

  • On which devices can ZenyPass be used?

On which devices can ZenyPass be used?

ZenyPass works on all types of computers, tablets and smartphones, regardless of their operating system: Windows, Mac OS X, Chrome OS, Linux, Android (from Lollipop version 5), iOS (from version 10). ZenyPass works directly in the web browsers of these devices, and is in particular compatible with Chrome, Edge (Chromium), Safari, Firefox, Brave, Opera, ...

ZenyPass is not compatible with Internet Explorer.

For iPhone and iPad users, it is recommended to create a ZenyPass icon on the home screen of your device (see : How can I access my ZenyPass vault from a smartphone or tablet running iOS or Android?).

For users of Safari on MacOS, it is recommended to create an access to ZenyPass for other browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave, ...), in addition to Safari.

For more details on the particularities related to the use of ZenyPass on Apple devices, see this article.

  • How can I create my ZenyPass vault?

How can I create my ZenyPass vault?

Creating a ZenyPass vault does not require any installation, and is as fast as creating an Amazon, or a Facebook account.

First make sure that your web browser is configured to allow storage of ZenyPass data (more details on this page). ZenyPass must be able to store some data, including the secret key to decrypt your records. This is essential in terms of security, since by storing this key on your device(s), only you have access to it, and only you can decipher the content of your vault.

    Then, follow these steps:

    • Click on "My vault" in the menu at the top right of this page, or go directly to the application page: my.zenypass.com
    • Click on "Create your vault" at the bottom of the page
    • Enter an email address
    • Choose a new ZenyPass password, and enter it twice
    • Click on "Create your vault"
    • Approve the General terms and Conditions of Use.

You will then receive an email asking you to validate your email address (if you do not receive it, check if it is not in your junk folder).

    • Validate your email

    Your vault is created.

Do not forget your ZenyPass password: it is mandatory to open your vault, only you know it, and for security and privacy reasons, we do not know it and we do not have access to it. It is therefore not possible to reset it.

  • How can I access my ZenyPass vault from a computer?

How can I access my ZenyPass vault from a computer?

Click on "My vault" in the menu at the top right of this page, or go directly to the application page: my.zenypass.com.

  • Can I use ZenyPass from multiple devices?

Can I use ZenyPass from multiple devices?

Yes, you can use ZenyPass from as many devices as you want, even with the free version of ZenyPass. The content of your vault is automatically synchronized across all your devices.

For security reasons, access to your vault by the browser of a new device requires prior authorization that only you can grant.

To allow a new browser to access your ZenyPass vault, follow these instructions.

For security reasons, we strongly also recommend that you never authorize a public device (a computer in a hotel, ...) to access your ZenyPass vault.

  • Can I access ZenyPass from different web browsers of the same device?

Can I access ZenyPass from different web browsers of the same device?

Yes, you can use ZenyPass from as many compatible browsers as you want, on the same device.

For security reasons, access to your safe by a new browser requires prior authorization that only you can grant.

To allow a new browser to access your ZenyPass vault, follow these instructions.

  • How many devices can I use?

How many devices can I use?

As many as you want. There is no limit to the number of devices you can use. However, we recommend that you allow access to ZenyPass only to devices that you own, and not to public devices (computer in a hotel, ...).

  • How can I grant a new device or browser authorization to access my ZenyPass vault?

How can I grant a new device or browser authorization to access my ZenyPass vault?

To allow a new web browser to use your ZenyPass vault (on a new device, or on a device that already has access to ZenyPass from another browser):

    • Open ZenyPass in the new browser, by going to my.zenypass.com
    • Click on "Authorize this browser".
    • The login screen then has an additional field to enter an authorization code.

    To generate this code:

    • Log in to your ZenyPass vault, from one of your browsers authorized to use ZenyPass (for example, from the one used to create your vault).
    • Go to the "Authorizations" page from the menu at the top of the screen
    • Click on "Authorize a new access"
    • An authorization code is then generated.

    On the new browser:

    • Enter your email address, your ZenyPass password, and this authorization code
    • and click on "Authorize this browser"

Wait until the card containing the authorization code, in the already authorized browser, becomes an authorization card for the new browser, then connect to ZenyPass on this new browser.

Note that for security reasons, we strongly recommend that you never authorize a public device (a computer in a hotel, ...) to access your vault.

  • What if I can no longer connect to my Zenypass vault?

What if I can no longer connect to my Zenypass vault?

If you can no longer connect to your ZenyPass vault, there are different things you can check.

    First of all:

    • Make sure that the email address you use to log in is the right one, and that the upper and lower case letters are the same as the ones used to create your vault. If you are not sure, you can open the welcome email you received when you created your vault, and click on "Access ZenyPass".
    • Make sure you are using the correct ZenyPass password
    • Make sure you are using an authorized browser (for example, the one used to create your account)
    • Make sure your browser is not in private browsing mode

If with these checks, you are still unable to connect, it is possible that the ZenyPass data stored by this browser has been deleted:

    • if prompted for it, did you allow your browser to store the ZenyPass data?
    • have you used any computer cleaning software, such as Ccleaner?
    • have you deleted the data stored by your browser?

In these cases, if you have access to ZenyPass from another device or browser, you can connect from it and then re-authorize the browser that no longer has access.

ZenyPass stores in the browsers authorized to access your vault data needed to decipher its content. The fact that this data is stored on your devices guarantees the confidentiality of your data, since only you can access it. But deleting this data makes it impossible to recover the content of your vault.

For more information on how to configure your browser, or Ccleaner, to use ZenyPass, please visit this page.

If despite these suggestions you are unable to connect, please do not hesitate to contact us through this form.

The site is then saved into ZenyPass.

  • How can I import multiple sites and credentials into ZenyPass?

How can I import multiple sites and credentials into ZenyPass?

A more detailed answer to this question is available in the ZenyPass help.

To save time, and transfer all your credentials and passwords stored in another application to ZenyPass, you can import a CSV file.

You can import CSV files from:

    • Google Chrome, or Brave
    • Excel (Windows), Google Sheet or LibreOffice
    • KeePass

or standard CSV files you have created.

    Creation of the CSV file

To create a CSV file with the passwords stored in Google Chrome or Brave:

    • Go to the "password" section in your browser settings
    • Click the menu button (the three dots) and then click "Export passwords"
    • Confirm "Export passwords" in the window that pops up

To create a CSV file from Excel, Google Sheet or LibreOffice:

    • Create a file with the following columns: name, username, password, url, comments. The order of the columns does not matter. The "name" column will correspond to the name of the record imported into ZenyPass, "username" will correspond to the user name, "password" to the password, "url" to the website address, "comments" to the comments.
    • Click on File
    • Click on Save As (or Download as for a Google Sheet)
    • Select the "CSV" format and UTF-8 encoding.
    • And save the file

The CSV file to be imported must therefore have a first line such as, for example:

    "name","username","password","url","comments"

Then have 1 line per account, following the same format, e.g.:

    "name","username","password","url","comments"
    "GMail","me@gmail.com","CxFfOxmVQ7U","mail.google.com","My emails"
    "Intranet","me@mycompany.com","5FVm+XG-G3e","intranet.company.com","Connect with email first"

To create a CSV file from KeePass:

    • Click on File
    • Click on Export
    • Select CSV
    • If your KeePass installation offers it, choose the fields "Title", "User Name", "Password", "URL", "Notes".
    • And click OK to save the file.

    Import of the CSV file

To import the identifiers of a CSV file:

    • enter your Zenypass vault
    • click on "Storage -> Import"
    • choose the type of CSV file you want to import
    • select the file
    • choose the credentials you want to import from the list of credentials in the CSV file (if your vault no longer has enough space to import all the credentials, you are prompted to add storage space).
    • click on "Import selection"
    • if you wish, enter keywords and comments that will be added to all imported records (by default, a comment with the import date and file name is added).
    • click on "Import"

The selection is encrypted, and added to your ZenyPass vault.

Delete the files used for the import, so that you do not leave your passwords on your device in a readable (unencrypted) format.

  • How can I use ZenyPass to sign in to a website?

How can I use ZenyPass to sign in to a website?

Open ZenyPass from my.zenypass.com, with your email address and your ZenyPass password.

Click on the site thumbnail of the site, then:

    • Leave "Open website on copy" checked to open the site while copying your login details
    • Click on " Copy " next to the username to start by filling in the username
    • or click on " Copy " next to the password to start by filling in the password

Paste on the site the element copied at the previous step.

If you wish, return to ZenyPass to copy the second connection field.

You no longer need to remember or type your password.

  • How can I organize the content of my vault ?

How can I organize the content of my vault ?

ZenyPass offers to organize the content of a vault by keywords, rather than by folders.

Each record can be associated with "Keywords" via the field provided for this purpose. To add a keyword to an existing record:

    • open this record by clicking on the arrow at the bottom right of its thumbnail
    • click on "Edit"
    • enter words in the "Keywords" field
    • click on "Save".

Once you have defined keywords, type them in the search field under the menu bar to filter the records and display only those that contain these keywords.

For example, you can define keywords associated with an activity, such as home, work, hobbies, shopping, etc.... You can also use keywords associated with a project (project1, project2, etc...) or simply the keyword favorites to quickly find the sites you use the most.

The advantage of using keywords, compared to folders, is that you can define several keywords for the same record. A record can have the keywords work, project1, favorites, and therefore be part of these different searches.

But you can also use several keywords (for e.g. work favorites) to refine a search.

In addition, searches are performed on all fields of a record (except the password field). You can therefore find a site, by searching for the name of its record, or part of its web address.

Tip : do you want to search only for defined keywords, and exclude other fields (url, name of the record,...) from the search? Use a # (or any other symbol) in your keywords to make them unique.

    • For example, searching for GMail will give you many results if you have a GMail address.
    • On the other hand, searching for #GMail will only display sites where one of the keywords is #GMail.
  • Can I still see my usernames and passwords when they are in ZenyPass?

Can I still see my usernames and passwords when they are in ZenyPass?

Yes, of course, your credentials belong only to you, you (and only you) can see them, modify them, ...

By default, your passwords are hidden, but you can view them by clicking on the icon and hiding them again by clicking on the icon.

Security and data privacy

  • What is the general security principle of ZenyPass?

What is the general security principle of ZenyPass?

ZenyPass is a "cloud" solution for storing encrypted data (ie data transformed into an illegible sequence of characters).

Data encryption is done directly on users' devices. Thus, no readable and exploitable data is never transmitted on the Internet, and is never stored on our servers. This is called end-to-end encryption.

Moreover, only users have the means to decipher their own data. Their ZenyPass password is used to create the keys to decipher their data, and since they are the only ones to know their password, they are the only ones able to read their data. Even ZenyPass administrators have no access to the users' passwords, and thus no access to their data. This is a zero-knowledge solution.

  • How safe is it to use ZenyPass? Is there not a risk in putting all my credentials in the same place?

How safe is it to use ZenyPass? Is there not a risk in putting all my credentials in the same place?

ZenyPass is actually the best way to secure passwords, and it is much safer than using a handful of vulnerable passwords and derivatives for most of your accounts!

With ZenyPass, you can easily use complex, and different passwords for each website. This is an essential principle of security on the internet.

Also, your master password is your best kept secret: ZenyPass administrators never, ever have access to it, it is never, ever stored anywhere, and it never, ever goes online.

Finally, your master password alone is not sufficient to retrieve any of your data: access to a device you have specifically authorized is also required!

Hence, securing all your accounts requires more than just the ZenyPass master password, and ultimately, ZenyPass effectively empowers you with a significantly improved security level.

  • What makes the ZenyPass password different?

What makes the ZenyPass password different?

The ZenyPass password is the password that allows you to unlock your vault.

But unlike other passwords you use to log in to other Internet accounts, the ZenyPass password never travels online: it is able to log you in without going through our servers.

This is important, since the fact that it is never transmitted online means that it can never be intercepted by hackers.

It is also a password that even ZenyPass administrators can not access.

Finally, this ZenyPass password is also one of the keys necessary to decipher the personal data that you logged into ZenyPass. Without this password, you data are indecipherable, they look like an unreadable sequence of characters with no meaning.

One of the consequences of these features is that this password can not be reset, without also resetting the data that you have entrusted to ZenyPass. It is a question of security and confidentiality. It is therefore important to remember your ZenyPass password (but it is now the only one you still have to remember).

  • Do ZenyPass administrators have access to my credentials?

Do ZenyPass administrators have access to my credentials?

No, ZenyPass administrators can not access your credentials or any data stored in ZenyPass. Access to both your main ZenyPass password and at least one of your devices would be required to retrieve any of your passwords, and they obviously do not have access to any of these.

Only you hold the keys necessary to access your data.

  • What if my master password is stolen? Are all my passwords compromised?

What if my master password is stolen? Are all my passwords compromised?

While you are responsible for making sure your master password is not shared with anyone, or doesn't get stolen, ZenyPass provides extra levels of protection.

Your master password provides access to the content of your vault only from your authorized devices. Therefore, knowing your master password would not be enough for a malicious attacker to retrieve your data.

  • Where are the ZenyPass servers located?

Where are the ZenyPass servers located?

ZenyPass is a French password manager, using servers located in Frankfurt, Germany, hosted by Digital Ocean. Your data is therefore subject to European regulations in terms of personal data protection.

  • What are the consequences for my data if the servers used by ZenyPass are hacked?

What are the consequences for my data if the servers used by ZenyPass are hacked?

If despite all the precautions taken upfront, the servers used by ZenyPass were hacked, only encrypted data would be stolen. No readable data would be intercepted.

The keys to decipher this data are not stored on the servers. Given the different levels of encryption used, the stolen data would therefore be unusable.

Your data therefore remains safe. A hacking of our servers would therefore have no direct consequences for our users.

  • Since even major websites are victims of high profile breaches, how can ZenyPass help me protect my accounts?

Since even major websites are victims of high profile breaches, how can ZenyPass help me protect my accounts?

Even in cases of massive data theft, ZenyPass allows you to better protect yourself, for three main reasons:

    1. ** ZenyPass helps to isolate the risks to the only breached site. ** If the password hacked is only used on one site, your other accounts remain secure. ZenyPass makes it easy to use unique passwords for each account, and thus reduces the risk of contagion of a data theft to your other accounts.

    2. ** ZenyPass helps prevent decryption of your password.** If the hacked site uses sufficient encryption techniques to protect its users' passwords, it will be extremely difficult and time consuming, or impossible, to decipher a strong password, while simple passwords, such as 123456, or a date of birth, or a word from the dictionary, will be decrypted by the hackers very quickly. By using strong passwords, your accounts remain better protected even in the event of a hacking.

    3. ** ZenyPass allows you to identify all accounts whose security is corrupted. ** When your credentials have been stolen, you must not only change the password of the breached website, but also the password of all accounts that use this password. With all your passwords secured in ZenyPass, you can easily see all the sites affected, and therefore take rapid action to stop any impact on those sites.
